Preamble

WHEREAS, Square dancing' is a part of the colonial heritage of the American
people; and                                                               

WHEREAS, Since 1651, square dancing has been a popular folk tradition; and

WHEREAS, Square dancing truly represents the American melting pot by blending
the Morris and Maypole dances of England, the ballroom dances of France, the Church
dances of Spain, and the folk dances of Australia, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Mexico,
Poland, Russia, and other nations; and

WHEREAS; Square dancing is a wholesome form of family recreation, in which
persons of all ages can participate; and                                                           

WHEREAS, Square dancing provides camaraderie and exercise for the physically
and mentally disabled; and                                                                                   

WHEREAS, The. official designation of square dancing as the State Folk Dance
unites a meaningful and historical symbol with our State character and pride; now,
therefore,

SECTION 1. BE' IT' ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

SQUARE DANCING IS THE STATE FOLK DANCE.                                                   

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect
October 1, 1994.
