REVISOR'S NOTE: Chapter ______, Acts of 1993, which enacted Division I of the

State Personnel Article, also amended subsection (a)(2) of this section to
incorporate without substantive change former Art. 64A, § 4(12), as it
provided unclassified service status for the executive director.

(b) (4) THE STEWARDS AND HARNESS JUDGES ARE IN THE UNCLASSIFIED
SERVICE OF THE STATE PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

REVISOR'S NOTE: Chapter ______, Acts of 1993, which enacted Division I of the

State Personnel Article, also added subsection (b)(4) of this section, which is
derived without substantive change from former Art. 64A, § 4(12), as it
provided unclassified service status for stewards and harness judges.

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(d) (1) (I) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive a salary of $44,500 and
an expense allowance of $1,000 per year.

(II)     [He] THE SHERIFF:

1.        [shall] SHALL appoint an undersheriff and chief deputy
sheriff, a sheriff captain, three supervisory deputy sheriffs, one administrative officer II
sheriff, one secretary sheriff, one fiscal associate II sheriff, AND one fiscal clerk
sheriff[,]; and

2.        [he may] MAY appoint a total of 69 deputy sheriffs.

(III)   EXCEPT FOR DEPUTY SHERIFFS, SALARIES FOR THESE
EMPLOYEES SHALL BE SET BY THE SECRETARY OF PERSONNEL. SALARIES FOR
DEPUTY SHERIFFS SHALL BE SET AT A RATE NOT LESS THAN THE SALARY
EQUIVALENT TO GRADE 12 OF THE STATE PAY SCALE.

(IV)    In addition to any other compensation received, [each] THE
sheriff shall receive an expense allowance of $200 annually for:

[(i)] 1. [ammunition] AMMUNITION for practice sessions at
the range;

[(ii)]2. [clothing] CLOTHING allowance to defray the cost of
dry cleaning and maintaining the clothing worn while on duty; and

[(iii)] 3. [the] THE purchase and maintenance of other items
necessary to fulfill [their] duties that currently are not furnished by the Baltimore City
Sheriff's department. [Salaries for these employees shall be set by the Secretary of
Personnel. Salaries for deputy sheriffs shall be set at a rate not less than the salary
equivalent to Grade 12, Base in the State salary plan.]
