EXECUTIVE ORDERS

route to the Indies. With only a crew of ninety, they
sailed the longest anyone has ever sailed in one direction
out of the sight of land. It was not until October 12, that
the crew sighted land - the Bahamas - the New World.

WHEREAS, The 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' voyages
to the New World and the spirit of exploration they
represent will be commemorated internationally in 1992;

WHEREAS, Columbus' courage and determination despite adverse
conditions led to important and lasting ties between Europe
and America;

WHEREAS, The United States Christopher Columbus Quincentenary
Jubilee Commission, in cooperation with Italy and Spain, is
planning a nationwide commemoration that focuses on cities
and states in the United States;

WHEREAS, The commemoration has great potential to enhance trade,
tourism, and international relations; and

WHEREAS, As an Atlantic coast state, it is appropriate for the
State of Maryland to participate and to recognize Columbus'
dramatic achievements and their contributions to our
nation's history and development;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM DONALD SCHAEFER, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE
OF MARYLAND, BY VIRTUE OF THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME BY THE
CONSTITUTION AND LAWS OF MARYLAND, HEREBY PROCLAIM THE
FOLLOWING ORDER:

A.  There is a Maryland 1992 Commission.

B.  Membership.

(1)  The Commission shall consist of 22 members
appointed by the Governor including 6 members of the Board
of Directors of Columbus 500/Baltimore and 6 citizens who
are interested in a statewide commemoration of the Columbus
quincentenary.

(2)  The following shall be members ex officio:

(a)  The Comptroller of the Treasury;

(b)  The President of the Senate or a designee;

(c)  The Speaker of the House or a designee;

(d)  The Secretary, Department of Economic and
Employment Development or a designee;

(e)  The State Superintendent of Schools or a
designee;
