A Senate Joint Resolution concerning
Central Corridor Light Rail Project - Extension to Annapolis
FOR the purpose of designating requesting the Department of Transportation to consider
the Glen Burnie to Annapolis corridor as a high priority an appropriate extension of
the Central Corridor Light Rail Project; and requesting the Department of
Transportation to develop a feasibility, schedule study and cost analysis and to
identify funding sources for the extension of the rail line to Annapolis, and when
performing engineering studies on proposals to replace the Old Severn River Bridge,
include in the studies an option to construct a certain bridge across the Severn River
capable of supporting a light rail track.
WHEREAS, In 1988 the General Assembly set in motion a process for the study and
implementation of a light rail transit system in Maryland; and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly and the Department of Transportation have
already taken the initial steps toward implementation of the Central Corridor Light Rail
line between Baltimore County and Glen Burnie in Anne Arundel County; and
WHEREAS, By extending the Central Corridor Light Rail line to Annapolis, the
citizens of the State would have an efficient, clean, and relatively inexpensive mass transit
line linking the State's capital with its largest metropolitan area; and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly finds considers that extension of the Central
Corridor Light Rail line to Annapolis is a high priority requirement as well as a logical next
an appropriate step in the development of a statewide light rail transit system; and
WHEREAS, Preliminary studies of the extension have already been conducted and
Anne Arundel County already owns the right-of-way over which the light rail line could
be constructed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Department of Transportation designate consider the Glen Burnie to Annapolis corridor
as a high priority an appropriate extension of the Central Corridor Light Rail Project; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That the Department of Transportation be requested to study, in
detail, the extension of the Central Corridor Light Rail line from Glen Burnie to Annapolis
