Ch. 742                                       LAWS OF MARYLAND

14.

(a)  It is unlawful to interfere with or hinder the
Commissioner in the performance of his duties under this
subtitle, or knowingly to give false information to the
Commissioner. Any person violating the provisions of this
subsection is guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction is
subject to a fine of not more than $1,000 or imprisonment for not
more than 90 days or both.

(b)  Any person who knowingly employs or permits a minor to
work in violation of any provision of this subtitle is guilty of
a misdemeanor and upon conviction is subject to a fine not
exceeding $10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1989.

CHAPTER 742

(House Bill 1376)

AN ACT concerning

Railroad Safety - Signal Operation

FOR the purpose of requiring the Department of Licensing and
Regulation, State Railroad Administration Division of Labor
and Industry to adopt the necessary safety regulations to
require railroad track signal circuits to be activated by
study certain safety issues relating to Maintenance of Way
personnel and Maintenance of Way motorized railroad track
equipment; and requiring a certain report by the Division of
Labor and Industry by a certain date.

WHEREAS, The State of Maryland is dedicated to providing
safe travel and safe working conditions for those who ride and
work on the railroads in this State; and

WHEREAS, Trains operating on a railroad track interrupt the
flow of ("shunt") an electrical current in the railroad track
thereby activating signal devices which alert railroad personnel
as well as motorists at railroad grade crossings of the presence
of railroad cars on the track; and

WHEREAS, Motorized railroad track equipment and rail mobile
vehicles used by Maintenance of Way forces personnel to maintain
