SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1989.

CHAPTER 642

(House Bill 148)

AN ACT concerning

Commission to Save the Lighthouses

FOR the purpose of establishing a Commission to Save the
Lighthouses; providing for the membership of the Commission;
charging the Commission with certain duties; requiring the
Commission to issue a report and make recommendations by a
certain date; providing for the termination of the
Commission; and generally relating to the Commission to Save
the Lighthouses.

Preamble

WHEREAS, There are only a few lighthouses remaining in
Maryland waters and they should remain at their original sites;
and

WHEREAS, A united effort of federal and State government,
private industry, and public interest groups is essential to save
and maintain the lighthouses; and

WHEREAS, Lighthouses are appropriate sites to welcome ships
to Maryland waters important navigational aids, cultural
artifacts, and historic structures; and

WHEREAS, Immediate and concerted action is necessary to
prevent further deterioration, destruction, and removal of the
lighthouses; now, therefore,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That:

(a)  The Commission to Save the Lighthouses is established
to investigate the problems of saving lighthouses in Maryland
waters.

(b)  The Commission to Save the Lighthouses is composed of:
