CHAPTER 560

(Senate Bill 174)

AN ACT concerning

Sentinel Birth Defects

FOR the purpose of requiring a hospital to disclose the identity
of a child who is born live or stillborn in the hospital and
has a sentinel birth defect to the Secretary of Health and
Mental Hygiene under certain circumstances; requiring a
physician to provide certain information to the parent or
guardian of a child who has a sentinel birth defect at
certain times; requiring requiring the Secretary to send a
letter to the parent or guardian of a child who is born live
or stillborn in the hospital and has a sentinel birth defect
informing the parent or guardian of certain services; and
generally relating to sentinel birth defects.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Health - General

18-206.

(a) In this section, "sentinel birth defect" includes:

(1)  Anencephaly;

(2)  Spina bifida;

(3)  Hydrocephaly;

(4)  Cleft palate;

(5)  Cleft lip;

(6)  Esophageal atresia and stenosis;

(7)  Rectal and anal atresia;
