SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article 38A - Fires and Investigations
[Elevators] QUICK FAST RESPONSE
RESIDENTIAL FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
47.
(A) IN THIS SUBTITLE, "QUICK FAST RESPONSE RESIDENTIAL FIRE
SPRINKLER SYSTEM" MEANS A SYSTEM DESIGNED TO AUTOMATICALLY DETECT
AND EXTINGUISH A FIRE WHILE CONDITIONS IN THE ROOM WILL STILL
SUPPORT HUMAN LIFE INTENDED TO AUTOMATICALLY DETECT AND CONTROL A
FIRE, THUS PROVIDING IMPROVED PROTECTION AGAINST INJURY, LIFE
LOSS, AND PROPERTY DAMAGE. THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO MAINTAIN
SURVIVABLE CONDITIONS IN THE ROOM OF FIRE ORIGIN WHEN SPRINKLERED
AND TO IMPROVE THE CHANCE FOR OCCUPANTS TO ESCAPE OR BE
EVACUATED.
(B) (1) EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH (2) OF THIS
SUBSECTION, A HOTEL OR MOTEL WITH 10 OR MORE UNITS, FOR WHICH A
CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION IS EXECUTED AFTER JULY 1, 1989, SHALL
HAVE A QUICK FAST RESPONSE RESIDENTIAL FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM
INSTALLED.
(2) IF AN OCCUPANT IS IF ALL OCCUPANTS ARE ABLE TO
EXIT THROUGH AN APPROVED EXIT DOOR, AS DEFINED IN THE 1985
EDITION OF THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION LIFE SAFETY
CODE, DIRECTLY TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING AND NOT ONLY TO A
CENTRAL CORRIDOR, A HOTEL OR MOTEL THAT IS A 1 OR 2 STORY
BUILDING IS NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE A QUICK FAST RESPONSE
RESIDENTIAL FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM INSTALLED.
