JOINT RESOLUTIONS

RESOLVED, That the Department of Natural Resources will
provide administrative staff support to the Committee and will
include a report of the Committee's activities in the
Department's annual striped bass report; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be forwarded by the
Department of Legislative Reference to the Honorable William
Donald Schaefer, Governor of Maryland; the Honorable Thomas V.
Mike Miller, Jr., President of the Senate of Maryland; and the
Honorable R. Clayton Mitchell,. Jr., Speaker of the House of
Delegates; and the Honorable Torrey C. Brown, M.D., Secretary of
Natural Resources, Tawes State Office Building, 580 Taylor
Avenue, Annapolis, Maryland 21401, who is requested to forward
copies of this Resolution to each of the members of the
Committee.

(House Joint Resolution No. 24)

A House Joint Resolution concerning

Radon

FOR the purpose of determining requesting the Governor to
establish a Task Force to determine
the extent of the radon
problem in Maryland and ; developing an appropriate course of
action for the State to take regarding radon; and requesting
the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to conduct a
certain radon survey throughout the State.

WHEREAS, Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive element
found in soil and rocks that make up the earth's crust; and

WHEREAS, Radon, an invisible, colorless, odorless gas,
dissipates in the air but is dangerous indoors; and

WHEREAS, Recent studies have shown that radon, leaking up
from the soil and into homes through cracks and poorly sealed
joints, presents a very serious health risk; and

WHEREAS, Sufficient doses of radon can produce lung cancer
in humans; and

WHEREAS, It is believed that radon is responsible for most
of the lung cancer risk to the general nonsmoking public; and
