Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(c) (1) The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall receive a
salary [of $37,500] AS PROVIDED FOR BY THE COUNTY COUNCIL.

(2)  The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County [may appoint
up to 23 deputies whose annual salary shall be fixed by the
Sheriff as in a general Anne Arundel County classified salary
schedule, pay grade 10, step 1 to 10, the step to be determined
by the Sheriff. Two of these deputies shall be assigned to the
Anne Arundel Child Support Enforcement Program. The Sheriff may
appoint up to four senior deputies whose annual salary shall be
fixed by the Sheriff as in a general Anne Arundel County
classified salary schedule, pay grade 11, step 1 to 10, the step
to be determined by the Sheriff. The Sheriff may appoint one
chief deputy whose annual salary shall be fixed by the Sheriff as
in a general Anne Arundel County classified salary schedule, pay
grade 12, Step 1 to 10, the step to be determined by the Sheriff.
In addition, the Sheriff shall receive $25,000 annually to be
used for the salaries of part-time deputies and additional
clerical assistants] SHALL APPOINT DEPUTIES AT A SALARY AS
PROVIDED BY THE COUNTY COUNCIL.

(3)  The payment of compensation and expenses of the
Sheriff's office shall be made from the general funds of Anne
Arundel County. [All Sheriff's office employees shall receive
corresponding salary increases, including any standard of living
increase, whenever increases are granted to other employees of
Anne Arundel County.] EMPLOYEES IN THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SHALL BE
IN THE COUNTY MERIT SYSTEM.

(4)  In case of emergency, the Sheriff may temporarily
deputize any able-bodied citizen to assist him in carrying out
the duties of his office.

(5)  The Sheriff and the deputies whose duties require
the use of automobiles shall be furnished at no expense with
suitable automobiles and any necessary maintenance, repairs or
upkeep by the County Council.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That whenever a
charter county makes provision for the safekeeping and custody of
prisoners and for the removal of persons convicted as provided in
this Act, the county executive may fill any personnel positions
established to perform those functions by transfer to those
positions of deputy sheriffs whose jobs might otherwise be

eliminated. Notwithstanding any provision of the county's

charter or local law to the contrary deputy sheriffs placed in
the county positions are not required to submit to a competitive
hiring process. Any transfer of benefits from service as a
