JOINT RESOLUTIONS
WHEREAS, This increase in the number of elderly citizens in
Maryland will result in a rapid growth in the need for medical
care that meets the specific problems of the elderly; and
WHEREAS, Less than 10% of the medical schools in the United
States currently include organized instruction in geriatrics as
part of their regular curriculum; and
WHEREAS, The body of knowledge on geriatric care has greatly
increased in the last 10 years and can be expected to advance
rapidly in the immediate future; and
WHEREAS, The education and training of physicians in the
area of geriatrics, is currently deficient to meet the future
needs of the elderly; and
WHEREAS, Grant programs have been established in Ohio and
New York to develop and implement geriatric education and
training programs; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Governor is requested to provide funding commencing in fiscal
year 1988 to the University of Maryland, School of Medicine and
The Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine to develop and
implement a geriatric care curriculum; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Schools of Medicine at the University of
Maryland and The Johns Hopkins University share the education
materials on geriatrics which they create with other health and
professional schools in this State, and with public and private
institutions and State agencies that are associated with
geriatric care; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Schools of Medicine at the University of
Maryland and The Johns Hopkins University work in consultation
with appropriate State agencies that are associated with
geriatric care to develop and implement a geriatric care
curriculum; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be forwarded by the
Department of Legislative Reference to the Honorable Harry
Hughes, Governor of Maryland, the Honorable Melvin A. Steinberg,
President of the Senate of Maryland, and the Honorable Benjamin
L. Cardin, Speaker of the House of Delegates.
