(a) If any Class A (passenger) vehicle, any Class E 1/2 or
3/4 ton truck, or any Class M (multipurpose) vehicle has been
altered in any manner that would reduce the effectiveness of its
bumpers or render the vehicle dangerous in the event of a
collision with another vehicle, it may not be operated on any
highway in this State. The Motor Vehicle Administration and the
Automotive Safety Enforcement Division of the Maryland State
Police jointly shall adopt rules and regulations relating to
bumpers as used in this section.
(b) Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, a
person may not operate on any highway in the State[:
(1) A] A Class A (passenger) vehicle with a bumper
that exceeds a height of 20 inches[; or].
[(2) A] (C) NOTWITHSTANDING ANY PROVISION OF LAW TO
THE CONTRARY, A PERSON MAY NOT OPERATE ON ANY HIGHWAY IN THE
STATE A Class E 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck or a Class M (multipurpose)
vehicle with a bumper that exceeds a height of 28 inches.
22-204.
(a) [(1) After] EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN SUBSECTION (B) OF
THIS SECTION, AFTER June 1, 1971, every motor vehicle, trailer,
semitrailer, and pole trailer, and any other vehicle that is
being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be
equipped with at least two tail lamps mounted on the rear, which,
when lighted as required in § 22-201.1 of this subtitle, shall
emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of 1,000 feet to
the rear[, except that:
(i) Motor vehicles manufactured or assembled before
that date, and all motorcycles, shall have at least one tail
lamp; and
(ii) The red light emitted from the tail lamps of
motor vehicles (including motorcycles) manufactured or assembled
before that date need to be plainly visible only from a distance
of 300 feet to the rear].
(B) EVERY MOTOR VEHICLE, TRAILER, SEMITRAILER, AND POLE
TRAILER, AND ANY OTHER VEHICLE THAT IS BEING DRAWN AT THE END OF
A COMBINATION OF VEHICLES, AND THAT WAS MANUFACTURED OR ASSEMBLED
BEFORE JUNE 1, 1971, SHALL HAVE AT LEAST 1 TAIL LAMP MOUNTED ON
THE REAR WHICH WHEN LIGHTED AS REQUIRED IN § 22-201.1 OF THIS
SUBTITLE, SHALL EMIT A RED LIGHT PLAINLY VISIBLE FROM A DISTANCE
OF AT LEAST 300 FEET TO THE REAR.
[(2)] (C) On a combination of vehicles, only the tail
lamps on the rearmost vehicle need actually be seen from the
distance specified IN SUBSECTIONS (A) AND (B) OF THIS SECTION.
