CHAPTER 298

(Senate Bill 148)

AN ACT concerning

Higher Education - Displaced Homemakers

FOR the purpose of repealing the current provision of law that
requires the termination of the Displaced Homemakers Program
after a certain date; clarifying that the exemption of
tuition under the Program is contingent on the availability
of certain funds; requiring an annual report on the Program;
providing that a certain requirement for the allocation of
certain positions among Community Colleges shall be a
minimum requirement; providing for a certain effective date;
and generally relating to educational opportunities for
displaced homemakers in the State.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Education

16-205.

(d) (1) For purposes of this subsection, "displaced
homemaker" is an individual who:

home ;

employment;

(i) Is over 35;

(ii) Has worked for the family in the family

(iii) Is not gainfully employed;

(iv) Has had, or would have, difficulty finding

(v) 1. Has depended on the income of a family
member and has lost that income as the result of separation,
divorce, or the death or disability of that family member; or

2. Has depended on government assistance
as the parent of dependent children and is no longer eligible for
such assistance; and
