                      I hereby certify that John E Nichols the
       bearer hereof otherwise called John Elson Nicholls a bright
       Mulatto man about twenty five years of age five feet
       nine Inches high with a scar on his brest near the thumb
       That the said John E Nicholls is a free man and was
       born free in the County aforesaid being the reputed son of
       Grace Nichols a free woman of Colour

       the reputed Daughter of Grace Nicholls a free woman of Colour
