           State of Maryland Prince Georges County sc.t

            I hereby certify that the bearer hereof Nathan
            Shorter a negro man of dark brown Complexion
       about twenty three years of age six feet high with a scar
       on the nail of the fourth finger of his left hand occasioned
       by a cut is a free man divers born free in the County
       aforesaid being the reputed son of Sarah Shorter a free
       woman of Colour

       became entitled to his freedom by virtue of a Deed of Manumission
       from Hezekiah Wheeler bearing date the twenty second day
       of June Eighteen hundred and five ^and duly recorded among^ of the Land Records
       of Prince Georges County
