2682                                          LAWS OF MARYLAND                                     Ch. 537

CERTIFIED BY THE MARYLAND POLICE TRAINING COMMISSION OR THE
MARYLAND STATE FIRE RESCUE EDUCATION COMMISSION. For the purposes
of (b) and (c) of the preceding sentence, "an organized police
department" shall mean an organized police department of this
State, or a county or municipality thereof, AND SHALL INCLUDE THE
SPARROWS POINT POLICE DEPARTMENT A POLICE DEPARTMENT CERTIFIED TO
MEET THE STANDARDS PRESCRIBED BY THE MARYLAND POLICE TRAINING
COMMISSION IF THE APPLICANT HAS COMPLETED THE PRESCRIBED COURSE
OF TRAINING; or a law enforcement agency of the United States of
America or any state of the United States, or county or
municipality thereof; or

(2) Such person or at least one member of the firm
and one officer or director of the association or corporation was
licensed or registered by the Superintendent pursuant to this
subtitle of this article on or prior to July 1, 1968.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1985.

CHAPTER 538

(Senate Bill 380)

AN ACT concerning

Maryland Tort Claims Act

FOR the purpose of providing that the waiver of the sovereign
immunity of the State and its units is extended to include
any claim of any amount to the extent of insurance coverage;
providing that sovereign immunity is not waived for certain
items; repealing a certain provision regarding the provision
of State liability insurance; providing that State personnel
are immune from certain tort suits; providing for the
separate trial of certain issues in these suits; providing
that certain- claims filed with the State shall contain
certain additional information; altering the effect of the
acceptances of- settlements of certain claims against the
State; altering the notice requirements for final denials of
these claims; altering the conditions which determine when
final denials of these claims occur; changing the statute of
limitations for certain tort claims against the State and
its units; providing certain requirements for the service of
certain legal documents; and generally relating to the
sovereign immunity of the State and its units and personnel
and to tort actions against the State and its units and
against State personnel.
