(a)  In this section "child" means:

(1)  Any child who is at least 16 years old and under
24 of any of the following State or local public safety personnel
killed in the line of duty:

(i) A professional or volunteer fireman;

(ii) A volunteer member of a rescue squad; [or]

(iii) A law enforcement officer; [and] OR

(IV) A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER; AND

(2)  A dependent legal child by birth or adoption of a
member of the Maryland National Guard who was a resident of this
State at the time of his death and was killed while on active
duty for the State or federal government.

(b)  There is a program of scholarships that are awarded
under this section.

(c)  A child who can demonstrate a financial need to the
State Scholarship Board may apply to the Board for a scholarship
under this section.

(d)  (1) A recipient of a scholarship under this section may
not be awarded more than $700 each year if the recipient is a
part-time student:

(2) A recipient of a scholarship under this section
may not be awarded more than $1,000 each year if the recipient is
a full-time student.

(e)  An award granted under this section may be used for:

(1)  Tuition and mandatory fees;

(2)  Room and board; and

(3)  Books and supplies.

(f)  The scholarship shall be paid to the institution on
vouchers approved by the State Scholarship Board.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
be construed retroactively and shall be applied to any
correctional officer killed in the line of duty on or after
January 1, 1984.

SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1985.
