SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1984.

(Senate Bill 235)

AN ACT concerning

Inmates - Commitment to Drug Abuse Programs

FOR the purpose of deleting the requirement that the Parole
Commission approve an inmate's petition to circuit court for
drug abuse administration commitment.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Article - Health - General

Section 9-638

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1982 Volume and 1983 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article - Health - General

9-638.

(a)   If an inmate in a correctional institution in this
State believes that the inmate is a drug addict, [then with the
approval of the Maryland Parole Commission,] the inmate may file
a petition to be committed to the Administration as provided in
Part V of this subtitle.

(b)  A petition under this section may be filed with the
circuit court for the county where the correctional institution
is located.

(c)  A petition under this section shall:

(1)  Be signed and verified by the petitioner;

(2)  State the petitioner's:

(i) Name;

(ii) Address;
