House Bill No. 384

AN ACT concerning

State Fossil Shell

FOR the purpose of designating the Ecphora guadricostata as the
State fossil shell.

BY adding to

Article - State Government

Section 13-311

Annotated Code of Maryland

(As enacted by Chapter ____ (S.B. 50) of the

Acts of the General Assembly of 1984)

Preamble

WHEREAS, There is no officially recognized State shell or
State fossil in Maryland; and

WHEREAS, The 4 ribbed fossil snail shell, Ecphora
guadricostata (Say), symbolizes a significant part of the natural
history of Maryland; and

WHEREAS, In 1685, an Ecphora guadricostata shell found in
St. Mary's County became the first fossil ever illustrated from
North America; and

WHEREAS, 1984 marks the 350th anniversary of the founding of
Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Adoption of this symbol would add a new dimension
to the 350th anniversary celebration; now, therefore,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

13-311.

THE ECPHORA QUADRICOSTATA (SAY) IS THE STATE FOSSIL SHELL.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect October 1, 1984.
