JOINT RESOLUTIONS

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be sent to the
Honorable James W. Johnson, Jr., Chairperson, State
Administrative Board of Election Laws, P. 0. Box 231, 11 Bladen
Street, Annapolis 21404; and the Honorable Joanne T. Goldsmith,
President, State Board of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street,
Baltimore 21201; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be forwarded to the
Honorable Harry Hughes, Governor of Maryland, the Honorable
Benjamin L. Cardin, Speaker of the House of Delegates, and the
Honorable Melvin A. Steinberg, President of the Senate of
Maryland.

(House Joint Resolution No. 51)

A House Joint Resolution concerning

Fair Trade Steel Act

FOR the purpose of urging the United States Congress to pass
certain legislation to limit imports of foreign steel
imports to a certain percentage of American steel
consumption for a certain period through enactment of
legislation before the House of Representatives; and
generally relating to the Fair Trade Steel Act.

WHEREAS, The American steel industry continues to contribute
significantly to the economies of the United States and the State
of Maryland; and

WHEREAS, The American steel industry provides hundreds of
thousands of jobs nationally and thousands of jobs in Maryland;
and

WHEREAS, The American steel industry spends annually
billions of dollars nationally and hundreds of millions of
dollars in Maryland for wages, materials, freight, and services;
and

WHEREAS, The American steel industry's contributions to our
national and state economies have diminished greatly over the
past 5 years principally due to unfair trade practices in foreign
steel imports; and

WHEREAS, Foreign steel imports unfairly traded in the United
States are devastating the American steel industry and have
resulted in the deterioration of our national and state
economies; and
