EXECUTIVE ORDERS
business community in the criminal justice and juvenile
justice systems improves all citizens' understanding of
those systems and improves the sensitivity of all
levels of government to the concerns of the citizens of
this State;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, HARRY HUGHES, GOVERNOR OF MARYLAND, BY
VIRTUE OF THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME BY THE
CONSTITUTION AND LAWS OF MARYLAND DO HEREBY ISSUE THE
FOLLOWING EXECUTIVE ORDER, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY:
1. There is a Governor's Citizens' Commission on
Crime Prevention.
2. The Commission consists of nineteen members
appointed by the Governor after consultation with the
President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of
Delegates, and chief elected officials throughout the
State.
3. The membership of the Commission shall
consist of leaders from throughout the State in the
private sector in order to provide a broad spectrum of
experience and viewpoint. The Maryland Criminal
Justice Coordinating Council shall provide staff
assistance to the Commission.
4. The Commission shall:
(a) Learn about crime prevention and
disseminate accurate crime prevention information
to the citizens of this State;
(b) Provide a forum for citizens
interested in crime prevention;
(c) Assist in the development and review
of policies and programs at the State and local
level that promote crime prevention;
(d) Investigate the feasibility and
further implementation of any citizen crime
prevention effort, including efforts in the areas
of neighborhood security and other volunteer
efforts and recommend appropriate means to
implement and coordinate those efforts;
(e) Increase citizen awareness of the
specific responsibilities, constraints,
strengths, and weaknesses of the criminal justice
and juvenile justice systems;
