(House Joint Resolution No. 79)

A House Joint Resolution concerning

Coal Fired Boilers

FOR the purpose of requesting the Secretary of Health and
Mental Hygiene to review existing rules and regulations
that limit the size of coal fired boilers.

WHEREAS, The United States Environmental Protection
Agency is scheduled to adopt in the near future new national
ambient air quality standards for inhalable particulates;
and

WHEREAS, Reduced reliance on foreign petroleum requires
greater utilization of native fuels; and

WHEREAS, Coal producers and distributers in this State
have the capacity to meet increased commercial, industrial,
and institutional energy needs; and

WHEREAS, The atmospheric dispersion characteristics of
many areas in this State provide ample dilution of
pollutants that are emitted from smoke stacks; and

WHEREAS, Considerable experience has been gained in the
design and use of compact pollution control equipment; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene is requested to
review all existing rules and regulations that limit the
size of coal fired boilers for the possibility of removing
their restrictions; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of Health and Mental
Hygiene report his findings to the Legislative Policy
Committee by December 1, 1982; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be forwarded
to Charles R. Buck, Jr., Secretary of Health and Mental
Hygiene, 5th floor, 201 West Preston Street, Baltimore,
Maryland 21201.
