(A)  If any volunteer firefighter or INDIVIDUAL SERVING
ON a volunteer rescue [squadmen] SQUAD dies as a direct
result of active participation in fighting a fire or while
going to or from a fire, or performing any other duties
necessary to the operation or maintenance of the fire
company or actively participating in the ambulance or rescue
work of an incorporated volunteer fire company or volunteer
rescue squad in the State, and leaves a surviving spouse, or
minor child or children; or if there is no surviving spouse
or minor child or children, but leaves a parent or parents,
or a sister or brother, who were dependent upon [him or her]
THE DECEDENT for support, there shall be paid to the
surviving spouse, or to the guardian of the minor child or
children, or the surviving parent or parents or sister or
brother dependent upon [him or her] THE DECEDENT for
support, AN AMOUNT DETERMINED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 4 OF
AT LEAST the sum of $2,000] from the treasury of the
Maryland State Firemen's Association.

(B)  If there is a surviving spouse or a dependent
child or children, the case shall be laid before the board
of trustees of the Maryland State Firemen's Association, and
if the facts are established as provided in § 42, the
surviving spouse, or surviving spouse and child, or children
as the case may be, shall be placed on the "Disabled
Firemen's and Rescue Squadmen's List," and the surviving
spouse, [as long as he or she remains] WHILE REMAINING
unmarried, shall be entitled to receive a pension from the
Maryland State Firemen's Association in an amount determined
by the board of trustees of the Maryland State Firemen's
Association, to be paid out of its treasury at whatever
times, in whatever installments and in whatever amount as
the board of trustees of the Maryland State Firemen's
Association may decide, until remarriage.

(C)  Each of the children of the deceased firefighters
or INDIVIDUALS SERVING ON A rescue [squadmen] SQUAD shall
receive a pension from the Maryland State Firemen's
Association in an amount determined by the board of trustees
of the Maryland State Firemen's Association and be paid out
of its treasury at whatever times, in whatever installments
and in whatever amount the board of trustees of the Maryland
State Firemen's Association may decide, until the children
each attain the age of 18 years.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1982.
