CHAPTER 391
(House Bill 1050)
AN ACT concerning

Natural Resources - Public Recreation on Private Land

FOR the purpose of amending the definition of "recreational
purpose" to include the activity of cutting firewood
for personal use so as to limit the liability of a
landowner who allows that activity on his property
under certain circumstances.

FOR the purpose of limiting the liability of certain
landowners who invite or permit without charge, persons
to cut firewood for personal use under certain
circumstances.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Section 5-1101(f) 5-1104
Annotated Code of Maryland
(1974 Volume and 1981 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
read(s) as follows:

Article - Natural Resources

5-1101.

(f) "Recreational purpose" includes the following or

any combination of the following: hunting, fishing,

swimming, boating, camping, picnicking, hiking, pleasure

driving, nature study, water skiing, winter sports,

horseback riding or horse driving, operating motorized
recreational vehicles, [and] viewing or enjoying historical,
archaelogical, scenic, or scientific sites, AND CUTTING
FIREWOOD FOR PERSONAL USE.

5-1104.

Except as specifically recognized by or provided in §
5-1106 of this subtitle, an owner of land who either
directly or indirectly invites or permits without charge
persons to use the property for any recreational or
educational purpose OR TO CUT FIREWOOD FOR PERSONAL USE does
not by this action:

(1) Extend any assurance that the premises are
safe for any purpose;
