Senate Bill No. 453

AN ACT concerning

Juveniles - Detention and Shelter Care

FOR the purpose of altering the period of time that may be
ordered by a juvenile court for continued detention or
shelter care prior to to a hearing on a juvenile petition.
allowing a juvenile court to continue detention or
shelter care under certain circumstances providing that
under certain circumstances a child who is taken into
custody may be kept in detention under the provisions
of the Juvenile Code for an additional period of time
beyond the period of detention initially ordered.

May 27, 1980
Honorable James Clark, Jr.
President of the Senate
State House
Annapolis, Maryland 21404

Dear Mr. President:

In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the
Maryland Constitution, I have today vetoed Senate Bill 453.

This bill increases the maximum period of detention and
shelter care which may be ordered by juvenile intake
officers without an adjudicatory or waiver hearing being
held.

House Bill 641, which was enacted by the General
Assembly and signed by me on May 20, 1980 accomplishes the
same purpose.

Therefore it is unnecessary for me to sign Senate Bill
453.

Sincerely,
Harry Hughes
Governor
