leaves his working place. If gas is ignited by a blast or
otherwise, the employee immediately shall extinguish the
fire. If he is unable to do so, he shall notify the mine
foreman. A worker shall give notice of the discovery of
explosive or noxious gas.

(e)  If safety lamps are required to be used in any
mine, a quantity one-fourth greater than that which is being
used always shall be kept on hand, ready for use. A
competent person shall be appointed to examine each lamp
immediately before it is taken into the workings for use.
This person shall ascertain that the lamp is clean, safe,
and secure before it is used.

(f)  A safety lamp may not be entrusted to any person
for use in a mine, until he has given satisfactory evidence
to the mine foreman that he understands the proper use of
the lamp and danger of tampering with it.

(g)  The mine foreman, if he believes the mine is
becoming dangerous from an accumulation of gas, and that
additional ventilation is required beyond the capacity of
the ventilating equipment, shall notify the district mine
inspector. The district mine inspector shall make an
immediate personal examination. If he finds that the
ventilating equipment is insufficient, he shall require by
special safety order that the operator provide adequate
equipment, and, if necessary, make an additional opening
from the surface, or bore a hole to furnish a vent in the
case of gas accumulation.]

(a)  Efficient means of communication and signalling
between the top and bottom of every shaft and slope and to
any other point shall be provided and maintained in a manner
directed and approved by the Bureau.

(b)  The Bureau shall prepare uniform forms for signal
and warning devices, and indicating signs. The operator of
each mine shall use these forms to notify each person
concerned of any danger not readily apparent.

(c)  The following signal code shall be followed in
every mine when signals are used:

(1)  One ring or whistle: Hoist; if in motion,
stop;

(2)  Two rings or whistles: Lower cage if
signaled from top, send away empty cage;

(3)  Three rings or whistles: Workers are coming
up. When engineer replies by one ring, persons get on cage
and ring once to hoist;

(4)  Four rings or whistles: Hoist slowly;
implying danger;
