Public Schools - Required School Days or Equivalent Hours

FOR the purpose of defining the school year in hours as well
as days; and permitting a county board under certain
conditions to open public schools for a certain number
of hours.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Article - Education

Section 7-103(a)

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1978 Volume and 1979 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article - Education

7-103.

(a) Except as provided in subsection (b) of this
section, each public school under the jurisdiction of a
county board shall be kept open:

(1) (I) For at least 180 actual school days
during a 10-month period of each school year; and

(2) (II) Except on Saturdays, Sundays, and
holidays, for at least 6 hours each day during the school
year; OR

(3) IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY AND ONLY WITH
THE APPROVAL OF THE STATE BOARD, FOR AT LEAST 1,000 HOURS
DURING A 10-MONTH PERIOD

(2) (I) SUBJECT TO THE ADVANCE APPROVAL OF THE
STATE BOARD, FOR AT LEAST 1,080 HOURS DURING A 10-MONTH
PERIOD; AND

(II) EXCEPT ON SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS, AND
HOLIDAYS, FOR AT LEAST 6 HOURS EACH DAY DURING THE SCHOOL
YEAR.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1980.
