Annotated Code of Maryland

(1977 Replacement Volume and 1978 Supplement)

Preamble
WHEREAS, The General Assembly finds that:

1.  The Maryland Vehicle Law presently sets forth rules
of the road with regard to the movement of pedestrians, in
close conformity with the Uniform Vehicle Code; and

2.  The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the
adopted State standard for the application and use of
traffic control devices, contains several recommended
designs for marking pedestrian crosswalks; and

3.  Standards have not been adopted for use by State
and local agencies responsible for crosswalk installations
in the selection of crosswalk designs for various locations;
and

4.  A need exists for uniformity in the type of
pedestrian crosswalks that are utilized at certain locations
depending upon conditions; and

5.  Legislative action is desirable to establish
uniform criteria for pedestrian crosswalk markings and to
direct the State Highway Administration and all affected
agencies to review the pedestrian crosswalk problem in this
State and develop a comprehensive program for its
improvement; now, therefore,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article - Transportation

21-101.

(g-1) (1) "Marked crosswalk" means any part of a
roadway that is distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing
by lines and markings "as provided in [paragraph] PARAGRAPHS
(2) AND (3) of this subsection.

(2) [The] EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH (3),
THE markings indicating a marked crosswalk AT A TRAFFIC
LIGHT, shall consist of two parallel solid white lines
marking both edges of the crosswalk. These lines shall be at
least six inches wide and at least six feet apart. However,
in an area where the speed limit is more than 35 miles an
hour, or where a crosswalk is located at other than an
intersection, or where the existence of a crosswalk is
unexpected, or where a crosswalk is located in a school
zone, these lines [shall be at least] MAY BE INCREASED TO A
