AN ACT concerning
Commission on Indian Affairs
FOR the purpose of specifying terms for the members of the
Commission on Indian Affairs; and, after a certain
date, precluding reappointment after a certain number
of years of membership.
BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,
Article 41 - Governor - Executive and
Administrative Departments

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:
Article 41 - Governor - Executive and
Administrative Departments
409-I.
(b) (1) The Commission shall consist of nine
members appointed by the Governor, a majority of whom shall
be members of the native American Indian communities of this
State. The members of the Commission shall have knowledge
of Indian culture and history, and be sensitive to the
problems of the Indian communities. THE TERM OF A MEMBER IS
3 YEARS EXCEPT THAT, OF THE NINE MEMBERS APPOINTED ON JULY
1, 1979, THREE SERVE 1-YEAR TERMS, THREE SERVE 2-YEAR TERMS,
AND THREE SERVE 3-YEAR TERMS. AT THE END OF A TERM, A
MEMBER CONTINUES TO SERVE UNTIL A SUCCESSOR IS APPOINTED AND
QUALIFIES. A MEMBER WHO IS APPOINTED AFTER A TERM HAS BEGUN
SERVES ONLY FOR THE REST OF THE TERM AND UNTIL A SUCCESSOR
IS APPOINTED AND QUALIFIES. A MEMBER MAY SUCCEED HIMSELF,
BUT MAY NOT SERVE MORE THAN 6 YEARS CONSECUTIVELY AFTER JULY
1, 1979.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect June 1, 1979.
