BOARD OF TRUSTEES MAY ADOPT, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES SHALL
VERIFY, AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE AFTER THE FILING OF SUCH
STATEMENTS OF SERVICE, THE SERVICE THEREIN CLAIMED.

(4)    SERVICE CERTIFICATES. —UPON VERIFICATION OF THE
STATEMENTS OF SERVICE THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES SHALL ISSUE
PRIOR SERVICE CERTIFICATES CERTIFYING TO EACH MEMBER THE
LENGTH OF SERVICE RENDERED PRIOR TO THE DAY OF THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF THE RETIREMENT SYSTEM, WITH WHICH HE IS
CREDITED ON THE BASIS OF HIS STATEMENT OF SERVICE. SO LONG
AS MEMBERSHIP CONTINUES A PRIOR SERVICE CERTIFICATE SHALL BE
FINAL AND CONCLUSIVE FOR RETIREMENT PURPOSES AS TO SUCH
SERVICE, PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT ANY MEMBER MAY, WITHIN ONE
YEAR FROM THE DATE OF ISSUANCE OR MODIFICATION OF SUCH
CERTIFICATE, REQUEST THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO MODIFY OR
CORRECT HIS PRIOR SERVICE CERTIFICATE.

WHEN MEMBERSHIP CEASES SUCH PRIOR SERVICE CERTIFICATE
SHALL BECOME VOID. SHOULD THE TEACHER AGAIN BECOME A
MEMBER, SUCH TEACHER SHALL ENTER THE SYSTEM AS A TEACHER NOT
ENTITLED TO PRIOR SERVICE CREDIT EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN
§86(5)(B) OF THIS SUBTITLE.

(5)   WHAT CONSTITUTES CREDITABLE SERVICE ON RETIREMENT.
—CREDITABLE SERVICE AT RETIREMENT ON WHICH THE RETIREMENT
ALLOWANCE OF A MEMBER SHALL BE BASED SHALL CONSIST OF THE
MEMBERSHIP SERVICE RENDERED BY HIM SINCE HE LAST BECAME A
MEMBER, AND ALSO IF HE HAS A PRIOR SERVICE CERTIFICATE WHICH
IS IN FULL FORCE AND EFFECT, THE AMOUNT OF THE SERVICE
CERTIFIED ON HIS PRIOR SERVICE CERTIFICATE.

(6)     HOLDERS OF EMERGENCY TEACHING CERTIFICATES.
—NOTWITHSTANDING ANYTHING TO THE CONTRARY PROVIDED IN THIS
ARTICLE MEMBERS WHO HELD EMERGENCY TEACHING CERTIFICATES,
AND WHO THEREAFTER EXERCISED THE OPTION OF MEMBERSHIP
EXTENDED TO THEM BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ACTING PURSUANT TO
ITS POWER SET FORTH IN §83(6) OF THIS SUBTITLE SHALL BE
ENTITLED TO SERVICE CREDIT FOR THE SERVICE PERFORMED BY SUCH
MEMBERS WHILE HOLDING EMERGENCY TEACHING CERTIFICATES,
PROVIDED THAT THEY PAY INTO THE SYSTEM AN AMOUNT EQUAL TO
THE CONTRIBUTIONS WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED OF THEM HAD
THEY BEEN MEMBERS OF THE SYSTEM WHILE PERFORMING SUCH
SERVICE.

ANY INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS BEEN DENIED THE BENEFITS OF THIS
SUBSECTION DUE TO RETIREMENT PRIOR TO ITS ENACTMENT MAY UPON
APPLICATION TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, RECEIVE THE SERVICE
RETIREMENT TO WHICH THEY WOULD BE ENTITLED IF THEY RETIRED
SUBSEQUENT TO THE ENACTMENT OF THE SUBSECTION.

(7)   OUT-OF-STATE, NONPUBLIC, OR POSTSECONDARY TEACHING
SERVICES. —A MEMBER MAY RECEIVE CREDIT TOWARDS ELIGIBILITY
FOR BENEFITS PROVIDED UNDER §86 OF THIS SUBTITLE FOR
OUT-OF-STATE PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHING SERVICE, NONPUBLIC
SCHOOL TEACHING SERVICE OR POSTSECONDARY TEACHING SERVICE UP
TO A MAXIMUM OF TEN YEARS IF THE MEMBER FILES A CLAIM FOR IT
WITH THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND PAYS INTO THE RETIREMENT
SYSTEM AN AMOUNT EQUAL TO THE RESERVES REQUIRED TO FUND THE
