No. 52
(House Joint Resolution 109)
A House Joint Resolution concerning
Disability Retirement
FOR the purpose of requesting the several Boards of Trustees
of the State Retirement Systems to consider the
feasibility of a periodic review of persons receiving
disability retirement allowances.
The three State retirement systems each provide
disability retirement benefits, whether through illness or a
job—related accident. The purpose of the disability
allowance is to provide an adequate benefit to persons who
can no longer work in State service.
Before a disability allowance is granted, the
individual undergoes a thorough medical examination.
However, there no longer is any requirement for a periodic
review of those persons who have teen receiving disability
benefits. Although there is no reason to believe that there
has been any abuse of disability benefits, the State may
wish to consider some method of review; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Boards of Trustees of the several retirement systems are
requested to review the feasibility of a periodic review of
persons receiving disability retirement allowances and to
bring their findings and recommendations to the Legislative
Policy Committee on or before January 1, 1979; and be it
