CHAPTER 524

(Senate Bill 962)

AN ACT concerning

Retriever Dog Training Permits

FOR the purpose of requiring the Department of Natural
Resources to issue annual permits to persons who train
retriever dogs; exempting assistants to the trainer
from obtaining a permit; providing that, upon payment
of a fee, the owner or custodian of a retriever dog may
train his dog at any time of the year; prohibiting a
trainer from hunting wildlife with his retriever dog

during a closed__season; and providing that a trainer

may possess and shoot artificially reared game birds
which are hand liberated and which are tagged before
their use with identification bands provided by the
Department of Natural Resources.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article — Natural Resources

10-413.

(E) (1) THE OWNER OR CUSTODIAN OF A RETRIEVER DOG
SHALL OBTAIN A PERMIT FROM THE DEPARTMENT BEFORE HE MAY

SHOOT ARTIFICIALLY REARED GAME BIRDS IN THIS STATE. SHOOT

ARTIFICIALLY__REARED GAME BIRDS FOR THE PURPOSE OF TRAINING

THE DOG. THE PERMIT IS NOT REQUIRED IN ORDER TO SHOOT GAME

BIRDS DURING AN OPEN SEASON OR ON A LICENSED SHOOTING

PRESERVE.

(2) ONLY THE TRAINER OF A RETRIEVER DOG AND NOT
AN ASSISTANT TO THE TRAINER IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A PERMIT
UNDER THIS SUBSECTION.

(3) ON PAYMENT OF THE $20 $5 PERMIT FEE, THE
DEPARTMENT SHALL ISSUE ANNUALLY A PERMIT TO THE OWNER OR
