LAWS OF MARYLAND
30A. (A)    THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF WICOMICO COUNTY MAY
ESTABLISH A COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN. THE
COMMISSION SHALL CONSIST OF SEVEN MEMBERS, EACH OF WHOM
SHALL SERVE FOR A TERM OF THREE YEARS. OF THE MEMBERS
FIRST APPOINTED, ONE SHALL SERVE FOR A TERM OF ONE YEAR,
THREE SHALL SERVE FOR A TERM OF TWO YEARS, AND THREE
SHALL SERVE FOR A TERM OF THREE YEARS. (B)    A MEMBER MAY BE APPOINTED FROM LISTS SUPPLIED
TO THE COUNTY COUNCIL BY WOMEN'S ASSOCIATIONS, RETIRED
WOMEN, AND OTHER CITIZENS' GROUPS WHICH HAVE A RECORD OF
SUPPORT FOR THE STATUS OF WOMEN. THE MEMBERSHIP SHALL
INCLUDE A CROSS SECTION OF INDIVIDUALS AND
REPRESENTATIVES OF AGENCIES AND GROUPS IN THE COUNTY
INVOLVED WITH THE CONCERNS AND ISSUES AFFECTING WOMEN. A
MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERS SHALL BE WOMEN OF THE COUNTY. (C)    THE OFFICERS OF THE COMMISSION ARE CHAIRMAN,
VICE CHAIRMAN, SECRETARY, AND TREASURER, EACH   TO SERVE
FOR A TERM OF ONE YEAR OR UNTIL THE NEXT ANNUAL     MEETING
OF THE COMMISSION. AN OFFICER MAY NOT SERVE FOR MORE
THAN THREE CONSECUTIVE TERMS IN THE SAME OFFICE.
OFFICERS SHALL BE ELECTED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE
COMMISSION AT ITS ANNUAL MEETING OR WHEN A VACANCY
OTHERWISE OCCURS. (D)    THE COMMISSION MAY: (1) ADVISE AND ASSIST IN
THE COORDINATION OF GOVERNMENTAL PROGRAMS; (2) DEVELOP
PUBLIC AND PRIVATE RESOURCES TO ALLOW FULL PARTICIPATION
OF WOMEN IN ALL ACTIVITIES WITH DIGNITY AND MEANING; (3)
STRENGTHEN HOME LIFE BY DIRECTING ATTENTION TO CRITICAL
PROBLEMS CONFRONTING WOMEN AS WIVES, MOTHERS, HOMEMAKERS,
AND WORKERS; (4) RECOMMEND METHODS OF OVERCOMING
DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE
EMPLOYMENT, AND ENCOURAGE WOMEN TO BECOME CANDIDATES FOP
PUBLIC OFFICE; (5) PROMOTE MORE EFFECTIVE METHODS FOR
ENABLING WOMEN TO DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS, CONTINUE THEIR
EDUCATION, AND BE RETRAINED; (6) SECURE APPROPRIATE
RECOGNITION OF WOMEN'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS
TO THIS COUNTY; AND (7) WORK TO DEVELOP HEALTHY ATTITUDES
WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE COMMISSION'S
RESPONSIBILITIES. THE COMMISSION SHALL MAKE AN ANNUAL
REPORT TO THE COUNTY COUNCIL. (E)    THE COMMISSION MEMBERS SERVE WITHOUT
COMPENSATION. THE COUNTY COUNCIL MAY BUDGET FUNDS FOP
CLERICAL ASSISTANCE, STATIONERY, AND POSTAGE AS NECESSARY
TO ASSIST THE COMMISSION IN THE NORMAL PERFORMANCE OF ITS
DUTIES.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1977. Approved March 31, 1977.
