AN ACT concerning
Funeral Directors and Embalmers — Examination
FOR the purpose of requiring a certain examination to
include cremation as one of the subjects of
examination; permitting a written examination to be
either the National Board administered by certain
national boards or an accredited examination
prepared by the National Funeral Service Examining
Boards; requiring a certain Board to provide a
cadaver for applicants in a practical demonstration
of embalming; and clarifying language.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Section 347(a) of Article 43 - Health, of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume
and 1975 Supplement) be and it is hereby repealed and
reenacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
Article 43 - Health
347.
(a) The Board shall examine the applicant as to
the proper sanitation and disinfection [of the clothing
and bedding] of persons dying from infectious or
contagious diseases [and of the premises in which they
died]. The examination also shall cover theoretically
and practically the subjects of anatomy, sanitation,
disinfection, embalming and the caring for and preparing
of DEAD HUMAN BODIES FOR burial, CREMATION, and shipment
[[of dead human bodies]]. The examination shall also
relate to laws and regulations on contagious, infectious
and communicable diseases. It shall also cover the laws
of this State, both general and local concerning burials
and burial permits; and the examination shall cover
[such] other subjects as the Board [may deem] CONSIDERS
necessary and proper. THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION MAY BE THE
NATIONAL BOARD ADMINISTERED BY THE CONFERENCE OF FUNERAL
SERVICE EXAMINING BOARDS OF THE UNITED STATES OR AN
ACCREDITED EXAMINATION PREPARED BY THE CONFERENCE OF
FUNERAL SERVICE EXAMINING BOARDS OF THE UNITED STATES.
