878 (852 Robert Knight living in Virginia in Mechoduck was cured of a paine of his Limbs An orphin Girle son of Graves Garrett Liveing in Sumersett County at y.e Eastern Shoar troubled w.th an Inward Distemper which made her sit crouching all of a heap w.th one potte of water which was carryed over to her some she Drank and some they washed her stomach and betwixt her shoulders was cured John Gerret Living at y.e same place having y.e yawes two yeares was cured in a fortnights time Last March when all y.e Doctors he tryed could doe him noe Good May it Please Y.r Ex.cy Since y.r Ex.cy has bee pleased to know my sentiments on y.e cold Springs I shall w.th as much Bovity & perspecanty Jean; Deliver my thoughts on y.e same; without running into y.e History and Orrigen of Fountains or side w.th any of y.e delivered oppinions On y.e 7.th of this Instant in obedience to y.e Comand I visited y.e Cold Springs by Drinking y.e waters by bathing and by what I geathered from those that came to recieve y.e benifitt of the medicinall waters I guess they have y.e ensueing powers Tho by y.e Taste they discover little or noe minerall they'r saturated with Yet their & citratizing faculty shew them Impregnated w.th salts whose points are adopted For y.e same y.e first and Coolest Spring whose virtue y.e Afflicted say cares cures old aches and paines in y.e limbs might be attributed to y.e Accute penetrateing salts of nitre which altho in it selfe is a very great fixer and astringer of y.e Fluid parts might without discussing correct y.e humours that are aflot and give y.e patient y.e Ease he finds for by often Bathing y.e nitrose salts by little and little will Cleanse by their Inbibing y.e malignity of y.e Distemper The second spring is not soe cold tho it is Difficult to be possitive in y.e destinition y.e lame who cheifely Report to this tell me they find by often bathing their Ulcers Catatrize which makes me it abounds w.th some stiptick quality which I rather attribute to allow it not at all savouring a vitriolick Taste y.e third and last spring which is their Cheife Drink at Meales is a sweet Coole water & very pleasent may be y.e covert it is under adds a pleasentness to y.e goodness of y.e water it has not that purging qualityes some say for a drank two or three quarts and am as easily moved as any one but could not pceive any Cathorlick quality it had Why I beleive y.e waters abound w.th nitre is from their effects for if I put my hand or foot in snow (whose Chrystalls are exact Nitrose Shootes) when taken from thence they presently Glow from y.e smalle nitrose particles which I suppose immedeatly enter y.e neighbouring vessells and gives a brisk fermenting heat to y.e part y.e same I observed here after I Dipped my foot and tooke it out y.e water I percieved y.e like glowing Immediatly as I before Instanced in snow it might be much enlarged on in Comendacon of nitre when it is in a good & Due vetrite and medium how it gives y.e blood its floridness & contributes to his Pa Bubam &c.a but since a subject soe much controverted on and so maney objections pro & con I will not give Y.r Ex.cy soe much trouble on that matter In fine y.e efficacy of y.e Waters and their medicinall qualties are to be sure very good and where there great water (were y.e sick regular and had all conveniencys) would pfect y.e same maney people of great Distance returning home rec.d much benefitt and been almost well and takeing some Waters w.th them to perfect y.e Cure afterwards relapsed doubtless for want of well purging and taking other necessary cares others have had an ulcer cured in one parte and immediatly broke out in another Which we must attribute to y.e like foulness of body I pcieved a great many bound their arms & leggs w.th wett cloathes thinking thereby to facilltate y.e cure which I'm sure must on y.e contrary by very prjudiciall and retard it there might be much more added to this which noe doubt Y.r Ex.cy has been acquainted w.th before you so largly contributed Y.r generosity in your benefaction and stipend to y.e sick and impotent which should aney of y.e better sort in some [illegible] follow y.e virtues of these springs would be mightily assisted and I Doubt not but their effects would be as ^great as^ aney whatsoever Y.r Ex.cy most obedient and oblidged humble servant W.m Vernon July 19 1698 To his Ex.cy Francis Nicholson Esq.r Capt Gen.ll and Govern.r in Chiefe of his Maj.ties Province of Maryland The humble Peticon of Phillip Clarke of S.t Maryes County Most humbly sheweth unto your Ex.cy that Whereas Judgment is passed ag.t Y.r peticoner in y.e Provinciall Court of Province for six thousand pounds of tobacco and six months Imprisonment according to an Act of Assembly for speaking severall scandalous and Defamatory words ag.t Your Ex.cy And tho your Peticoner must needs owne that that he Deserves noe favour or mercy of Y.r Ex.cy having been forgiven by Y.r Ex.cy and Committing againe y.e same offence Agravated w.th y.e keeping Company w.th [illegible] and Gerrard Slye Notorious Disturbers of this Governm.t for all which offences Y.r Peticoner can offer noething that [illegible] your Ex.cy to mercy but that he is fully satisfied of his past errors and heartily sorry for y.e same Humbly |
