of Maryland have their blood pressure checked annually.
Furthermore, the General Assembly supports the efforts of
the Statewide Steering Committee to develop programs for
detection, diagnosis, treatment, and long—term management
of high blood pressure and will look to this Steering
Committee for advice and recommendations on the problem
of high blood pressure in Maryland; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be sent to
the members of the Statewide Steering Committee.

A House Joint Resolution concerning
State Drinking Water Advisory Council
FOR the purpose of requesting the Secretary of the State
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene [[and the
Secretary of the State Department of Natural
Resources]] to appoint a [[Joint]] State Drinking
Water Advisory Council; and providing for the
composition of that Council.
The General Assembly of Maryland recognizes that the
recent discovery of possible carcinogenic chemicals in
the drinking water supplies of several United States
cities has created an awareness that every possible
precaution must be exercised to insure that drinking
water systems in this State are maintained in a manner
that will provide the greatest possible protection and
safety to their users.
The President of the United States has recently
signed the Safe Drinking Water Act which enhances the
ability of the federal government to conduct research
into the health effects of contaminants in drinking
water. However, the Act delegates most regulatory
authority in establishing and enforcing drinking water
standards to the states and municipalities.
Since the [[Departments]] Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene [[and Natural Resources are both]] is
responsible for maintaining the quality of the waters of
this State, the [[Secretaries of these Departments]]
Secretary of this Department should appoint a joint State
