Article 48 — Inspections
168.
This subtitle shall be known and may be cited as the
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act and, except as
otherwise herein provided, shall apply to all boilers and
pressure vessels. For the purpose of this subtitle, the
following definitions apply.
(a) Boiler—-a closed vessel in which water is
heated, steam is generated, steam is superheated, or any
combination thereof, under pressure or vacuum for use
externally to itself by the direct application of heat
from the combustion of fuels, or from electricity or
nuclear energy. The term "boiler" shall include fired
units for heating or vaporizing liquids other than water
where these units are separate from processing systems
and are complete within themselves.
(1) Power boiler—a boiler in which steam or other
vapor is generated at a pressure of more [that] THAN
fifteen (15) psig.
(2) High pressure, high temperature water boiler—a
water boiler operating at pressures exceeding 160 psig or
temperatures exceeding 250 degrees F.
(3) Heating boiler—a steam boiler operating at
pressures not exceeding fifteen (15) psig, or a hot water
boiler operating at pressures not exceeding 160 psig or
temperatures not exceeding 250 degrees F.

(a) Each company employing such special inspectors
meeting the requirements of SECTION 174 of this subtitle
shall, within thirty (30) days following each certificate
inspection made by such inspectors, file a report of such
inspection with the chief boiler inspector upon
appropriate forms as promulgated by the National Board of
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors. The filing of
reports of external inspections shall not be required
except when such inspections disclose that the boiler is
in a dangerous condition.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1974.
