(a) Except as hereinafter provided, single unit
commercial motor vehicles with two or more axles shall
pay a registration fee based upon shipping weight of the
chassis and battery as certified by the manufacturer,
with gross weight limitations for the vehicle and load,
as follows:

These vehicles shall be known as Class E vehicles. A
CLASS E VEHICLE WHICH IS CONSTRUCTED TO TOW A TRAILER
WHERE THE GROSS COMBINATION WEIGHT IS IN EXCESS OF 55,000
POUNDS MAY BE REGISTERED FOR 73,280 POUNDS GROSS WEIGHT
THAT SHALL APPLY ONLY WHEN OPERATED IN COMBINATION WITH A
LICENSED TRAILER WITH TWO OR MORE AXLES, BUT SHALL BE
LIMITED TO 55,000 POUNDS GROSS WEIGHT WHEN OPERATING AS A
SINGLE UNIT.
