1860                                                 LAWS OF MARYLAND                            [Ch. 544

(2)    The County Commissioners shall furnish the
Sheriff's office with [four] NOT MORE THAN FIVE
automobiles, and shall pay all necessary operating
expenses including but not limited to, gasoline, oil,
insurance, and repairs, and shall replace these
automobiles with new ones at least once every two years.
The Sheriff and deputy sheriffs are entitled to an
expense allowance for travel to be paid monthly at the
rate of ten cents per mile actually traveled, upon
vouchers submitted by the Sheriff to the County
Commissioners of Cecil County, in the form they specify.
The Sheriff shall submit with the vouchers an affidavit
sworn to by him upon personal knowledge showing for each
day of the month just passed the number of miles each
vehicle used by him and his deputies has been driven in
the performance of the duties of his or their office, as
determined by him from a daily check of the [speedometer]
ODOMETER readings of the respective vehicles. A mileage
allowance shall not be allowed in the event automobiles
are furnished to the Sheriff and deputies by the County
Commissioners. The Sheriff's office shall also receive an
appropriation of $1,500, to be used for special
investigations and employees, subject to the approval of
the County Commissioners.

(3)    The Sheriff may appoint additional temporary
deputy sheriffs if necessary for the public safety but
only after he has secured the approval of the County
Commissioners and the administrative judge of the Circuit
Court of Cecil County. The County Commissioners shall
allow reasonable compensation for these temporary
deputies, but they shall not serve longer than the case
actually requires.

(4)    SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS, THE SHERIFF MAY EMPLOY FOUR CLERKS OR
DISPATCHERS AT A SALARY TO BE SET BY THE COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS.

(5)    ALL EMPLOYEES COVERED BY THIS SECTION ARE
DECLARED TO BE EMPLOYEES OF CECIL COUNTY FOR PURPOSES OF
EMPLOYMENT SECURITY.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1974.
