SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Section 2-309 (i) of Article - Courts and
Judicial Proceedings, of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1971 Volume) be and it is hereby repealed and
re—enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

2-309.
(i) (1) The Sheriff of Cecil County shall receive
a salary of [$10,500] $12,500 and free lodging for
himself and his family at the jail or $1,500 per year.
The Sheriff shall appoint nine full—time deputy sheriffs,
one as chief deputy and one as investigator. AFTER THE
INVESTIGATOR HAS PERFORMED HIS DUTIES, HE SHALL ASSUME
THE DUTIES OF A DEPUTY. The STARTING salary of the chief
deputy and investigator [shall be] IS [$6,500 with annual
increments of $400, subject to approval of the Sheriff
with a maximum salary of $8,500] $8,000 AND THEIR MAXIMUM
SALARY IS $10,500. The remaining [eight deputies shall
receive salaries of $6,200 each with annual increments of
$400, subject to the approval of the Sheriff with a
maximum annual salary of $8,000. ] SEVEN DEPUTIES"
STARTING SALARY IS $7,700 AND THEIR MAXIMUM SALARY IS
$10,200. The Sheriff Bay hire five clerks or jailers [who
shall receive $5,500 each with annual increments of $400,
with the approval of the Sheriff, and with a maximum
salary of $7,500.] WHOSE STARTING SALARY IS $7,000 AND
WHOSE MAXIMUM SALARY IS $9,500. EACH DEPUTY SHERIFF AND
EACH CLERK OR JAILER SHALL RECEIVE ANNUAL INCREMENTS OF
$400 AFTER THE FIRST YEAR OF SERVICE, $500 AFTER THE
SECOND, THIRD, AND FOURTH YEARS, AND $600 AFTER THE FIFTH
YEAR. EACH DEPUTY SHERIFF AND EACH CLERK OR JAILER MAY
NOT RECEIVE THE FIRST YEAR INCREMENT OF $400 PRIOR TO THE
COMPLETION OF ONE FULL YEAR OF SERVICE. INCREMENTS SHALL
BEGIN THE JULY 1 OF EACH YEAR IN WHICH THEY ARE
EFFECTIVE. THE TREASURER SHALL CERTIFY THE SALARIES AND
ANNUAL INCREMENTS OF THIS SUBSECTION. IF ANY DEPUTY
SHERIFF, CLERK, OR JAILER RESIGNS OR IS FIRED AND
SUBSEQUENTLY IS REHIRED AS A DEPUTY SHERIFF, CLERK, OR
JAILER, HE SHALL BE PAID AS IF HE WERE HIRED FOR THE
FIRST TIME AND MAY NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR PREVIOUS
SERVICE.
