Susquehannocks and Wicomicos is essential to a complete
view of the history of Maryland.

WHEREAS, There is a definite need for an ongoing
agency to continue research, collection and preservation
activities; to encourage and support where possible the
local efforts of historical and cultural groups
throughout the State; to insure active minority
participation in such important observances as the
American Revolution Bicentennial; to bring about a
clearer understanding of the role and contribution of
minority citizens to the building of the enrichment of
Maryland life and history; and to insure continued active
participation in all phases of the State's cultural life
and development; now, therefore:

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Section 409 and the subtitle "Commission
on Negro History and Culture" of Article 41 —
Governor—Executive and Administrative Departments, of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume and
1973 Supplement) be and it is hereby repealed.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That new
Section 409 to be under the new subtitle "Commission on
Afro—American and Indian History and culture" be and it
is hereby added to Article 41 — Governor—Executive and
Administrative Departments, of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume and 1973 Supplement) to
read as follows:

COMMISSION OF AFRO-AMERICAN AND INDIAN
HISTORY AND CULTURE

409.

(A)    THE COMMISSION ON AFRO-AMERICAN AND      INDIAN
HISTORY AND CULTURE IS CREATED AS AN INDEPENDENT   AGENCY
WITHIN THE STATE GOVERNMENT. IT SHALL BE REFERRED   TO AS
THE "COMMISSION."

(B)     (1) THE COMMISSION SHALL CONSIST OF NINE
MEMBERS APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR. THE APPOINTEES SHALL
REPRESENT THE ENTIRE MARYLAND COMMUNITY, AND THEY SHALL
HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF AFRO-AMERICAN AND INDIAN CULTURE AND
HISTORY, RESPECTIVELY; BE SENSITIVE TO THE PROBLEMS OF
MINORITY COMMUNITIES; AND BE CONNECTED WITH AGENCIES
WORKING TO INTEGRATE MINORITY HISTORY AND CULTURE INTO
