incidental to his duties of $2,500. In addition to his salary, the
Sheriff shall receive [$100,500] $115,500 $110,500 annually to be
used for salaries of deputies and any clerical assistance he deems
necessary.
The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall be entitled to appoint
such number of deputies, not less than fourteen (14) however, and
any clerical assistance required by the duties of the office. Nothing
herein, however, shall be construed to prevent the Sheriff, in case
of emergency, from temporarily deputizing any able-bodied citizen
to assist him in carrying out the duties of his office. All deputies
shall be furnished with automobiles suitable for the performance of
their duties by the County Council, at no expense to the deputies.
The payment of the compensation and expenses provided for
herein shall be made from the general funds of Anne Arundel County,
in the same manner as other general county disbursements are made.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1971.

CHAPTER 317
(House Bill 653)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 11 (a) of
Article 36 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1970 Supplement),
title "Fees of Officers," subtitle "Bailiffs and Criers," to change the
provisions relating to the pay of bailiffs in Charles County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 11 (a) of Article 36 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1970 Supplement), title "Fees of Officers," subtitle "Bailiffs and
Criers," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:
11.
(a) Bailiffs. Every bailiff attending the circuit courts in the
counties in this State shall be entitled to the compensation hereinafter
prescribed for each day he shall attend said court, except as other-
wise herein provided.
(1) Bailiffs in Allegany, Cecil, Howard, Prince George's and
Washington counties shall each receive five dollars ($5.00) per day.
(2) Bailiffs in Anne Arundel County shall receive fifteen dollars
($15.00) per day.
(3) Bailiffs in Calvert County shall receive one hundred and
twenty-five dollars ($125.00) per year.
(4) Bailiffs in Cecil County shall each receive such compensation
as the County Commissioners shall determine, but in no event shall
they be paid less than five dollars ($5.00) per day.
