37.

(m) The Sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual salary
of [$7,200] $9,500. $10,500. He shall appoint such additional depu-
ties as may be authorized by the County Commissioners of Howard
County. After July 1, 1968, the compensation of such deputies shall
be determined by the County Commissioners of Howard County. All
such deputies shall hold office at the pleasure of the Sheriff and may
be removed at any time the Sheriff may elect, or by the Circuit Court
for Howard County upon indictment and conviction as provided
by law. The County Commissioners may prescribe and provide for
the payment of the traveling and other expenses of the Sheriff and
said deputies. The Sheriff may also appoint temporarily such addi-
tional deputy sheriffs as he may deem necessary for the public
safety and the County Commissioners shall allow reasonable com-
pensation for same, but such deputies shall not serve longer than
the case actually warrants.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this
Act shall not be construed to extend or apply to the Sheriff of
Howard County in office on the effective date of this Act, but the
provisions of this Act shall take effect with the next term of office.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1970.

CHAPTER 30
(Senate Bill 604)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 206 (b)
of Article 41 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1969 Supple-
ment), title "Governor—Executive and Administrative Depart-
ments," subtitle "The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene,"
providing for the appointment and term of office of all assistant
secretaries, professional consultants and other employees of the
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 206 (b) of Article 41 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1969 Supplement), title "Governor—Executive and Adminis-
trative Departments," subtitle "The Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

206.

(b) The Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene shall serve at
the pleasure of the Governor. He shall be directly responsible to
the Governor and shall counsel and advise him on all matters as-
signed to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The Secre-
tary shall be responsible for carrying out the Governor's policies
in the areas of health and mental hygiene. The Secretary shall
