It shall be unlawful for any person to [wilfully or maliciously
put] sink any [stake, log, stone, ballast or other] obstruction
in the berth or haul of any fishery, OR DELIBERATELY TO IN-
TERFERE WITH THE OPERATION OF A HAUL SEINE AFTER
IT HAS BEEN SET AND IS BEING HAULED subject to the
penalties hereinafter provided.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1970.

(House Bill 1065)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (w)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1969 Replace-
ment Volume), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," to increase in Worcester County the number of deputy
sheriffs; to authorize certain other additions to the sheriff's staff;
to change the allowance allotted for salaries of the deputies and
other staff members; to require the county commissioners to pay
the operating expenses of the sheriff's office and the county jail;
and raising the sheriff's salary.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(w) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1969 Replacement Volume), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Com-
pensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(w) (1) The Sheriff of Worcester County shall receive an annual
salary of [$5,500] not less than $10,000 $9,000 and such an additional
amount as may be approved by the County Commissioners of said
County. He shall appoint not less than [two] four deputies who shall
each receive an annual salary of [, $5,500] not less than $7,500 $6,500,

$5,300 and such additional deputies, clerks, cooks and jailers at
such compensation as may be approved by the County Commissioners
of said county.

(2) The County Commissioners of Worcester County [are
hereby authorized to provide the following for the use of the
Sheriff's office for law enforcement at an annual cost not to ex-
ceed such amount as shall be prescribed in the budget by the County
Commissioners:] shall pay the cost of all necessary expenses for
the operation of the Worcester County Jail, the Sheriff and his
staff, including, but not limited to, five automobiles, automobile operat-
ing expenses, radio equipment, weapons, ammunitions, office supplies,
office equipment, uniforms and all traveling expenses of the Sheriff
and his staff while out of the county on official business.
