children shall be furnished to the State Board of Health AND MADE
AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
56A. Cooperative administrative activities.
The county boards of education may enter into agreements with
the county commissioners or county councils for the cooperative or
joint administration of programs, including but not limited to per-
sonnel, purchasing, accounting, data processing, printing, insurance,
building maintenance, and transportation.
Chapter 5. Superintendent of Schools
57. Appointment; term; salary.
(a) Appointment, term, and qualifications—The county board
of education of each county shall appoint during the month of
February a superintendent of schools for a term of four years
beginning on the first day of July next succeeding his appointment,
and he shall hold office until his successor qualifies. No person shall
be eligible for appointment to the office of county superintendent of
schools who, is not eligible to be issued a certificate for such office by
the State Superintendent of Schools, nor shall the appointment of
any person by the county board of education to the position of county
superintendent of schools be valid without the written approval of the
State Superintendent of Schools; provided, however, that if the State
Superintendent of Schools shall not approve of the proposed appoint-
ment of a person to the position of county superintendent of schools,
he shall certify in writing to the county board of education his
reasons for such refusal to approve of the appointment of such person.
(b) Salaries—All superintendents of schools shall be paid on the
basis of the salaries hereinafter specified. The salary of the superin-
tendent of schools shall not be diminished during his term of office.
The superintendent of schools shall devote his entire time to public
school business, and shall receive such compensation as the board of
education shall direct, during the first year of a local superintendent's
service as such in the State of Maryland, he shall receive an annual
salary of not less than fourteen thousand dollars ($14,000); during
his second year of such service in the State of Maryland, his annual
salary shall be not less than fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000);
during his third year of such service in the State of Maryland, his
annual salary shall be not less than sixteen thousand dollars
($16,000); during his fourth year of such service in the State of
Maryland, his annual salary shall be not less than seventeen thousand
dollars ($17,000); and for the fifth year of such service in the State of
Maryland and thereafter, his annual salary shall be not less than
eighteen thousand dollars ($18,000).
(c) When salaries to be shared in by State; salaries in excess
of schedule.—Salaries paid superintendents who are emp |
