Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect

CHAPTER 389
(House Bill 995)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 211 (d)
and (g) of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1967
Replacement Volume), title "Motor Vehicles," subtitle "Operation
of Vehicles upon Highways," to set a maximum speed limit for
interstate highways, WITH CERTAIN EXCEPTIONS, and to pro-
vide penalty for driving in excess thereof.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 211 (d) and (g) of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1967 Replacement Volume), title "Motor Vehicles,"
subtitle "Operation of Vehicles upon Highways," be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

211.

(d) No motor vehicles shall be operated upon any highway of
this State at a rate of speed greater than fifty miles per hour, or
fifty-five miles per hour on dual lane through highways; provided,
however, that on dual lane highways which are constructed as con-
trolled or limited access highways the maximum speed limit shall be
sixty miles per hour unless a lower maximum speed limit shall be
designated by the State Roads Commission. Provided, however, that
on interstate highways within this State the maximum speed limit
shall be seventy miles per hour unless a lower maximum speed limit
shall be designated by the State Roads Commission,
EXCEPT THAT
TRACTOR TRAILER COMBINATIONS AND TRUCKS IN EX-
CESS OF ¾ TON MANUFACTURER'S RATING SHALL BE
LIMITED TO A MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT OF 60 MILES PER
HOUR. Whenever the State Roads Commission shall determine, as
a result of traffic, weather or other conditions, that the maximum
speed limit should be less than [sixty miles per hour] that provided
hereinabove,
it shall have the authority by appropriate signing and
giving notice thereof to reduce said maximum speed limit to such
speed as it shall deem proper.

(g) Any person operating any motor vehicle upon any highway
of this State at a rate of speed greater than seventy miles per hour, or
operating any motor vehicle upon an interstate highway within this
State at a rate of speed greater than seventy-five miles per hour,
shall be subject, upon conviction, to a fine of not less than one hun-
dred dollars ($100.00) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00)
or to be imprisoned for not less than thirty (30) days nor more than
one (1) year, or to both fine and imprisonment, for the first offense.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1969.
