(House Bill 872)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (b) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1968 Supplement),
title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," to increase
the salary of the Sheriff of Anne Arundel County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(b) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1968 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, and to read as follows:

37.

(b) The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall receive an annual
salary of [$10,000] $12,500 plus an expense allowance for his
personal expenses incidental to his duties of $2,500. In addition to
his salary, the Sheriff shall receive $80,000 annually to be used for
salaries of deputies and any clerical assistance he deems necessary.

The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall be entitled to appoint
such number of deputies, not less than twelve (12) however, and
any clerical assistance required by the duties of the office. Nothing
herein, however, shall be construed to prevent the Sheriff, in case
of emergency, from temporarily deputizing any able-bodied citizen
to assist him in carrying out the duties of his office. All deputies
shall be furnished with automobiles suitable for the performance
of their duties by the County Commissioners, at no expense to the
deputies. The payment of the compensation and expenses provided
for herein shall be made from the general funds of Anne Arundel
County, in the same manner as other general county disbursements
are made.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this Act
shall not be construed to extend or apply to the Sheriff of Anne
Arundel County in office on the effective date of this Act, but the
provisions of this Act shall take effect with the next term of office.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1969.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 46C of
Article 17 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1966 Replacement
Volume), title "Clerks of Courts," subtitle "Clerk of Court of
Special Appeals," to increase the number of copies of the opinions
of the Court of Special Appeals.
