being Article 9 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland),
title "Charles County," subtitle "Sheriff," to provide for the fixing
of deputy sheriffs' salaries through joint action by the Board of
Public Safety and the Charles County Commissioners.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 320(d) of the Code of Public Local Laws of Charles
County (1965 Edition, being Article 9 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland), title "Charles County," subtitle "Sheriff," be
and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:

320.

(d) The [salaries] salary of the Sheriff [and deputy Sheriff's
are] is fixed by Section 37(h) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code,
as amended from time to time. The salaries of the deputy sheriffs
shall be set by action of the Board of Public Safety and confirmed by
the approval of the appropriation of budget funds for these salaries
by the County Commissioners.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1969.

CHAPTER 317
(House Bill 542)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(h) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1968 Supplement),
title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," to provide
for the compensation and auditing of books of the sheriff of Charles
County and to remove the provision pertaining to deputies. PRO-
VIDE FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY SHERIFFS.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(h) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1968 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

37.

(h) The Sheriff of Charles County shall receive an annual salary of
nine thousand dollars ($9,000). THE BOARD OF PUBLIC SAFETY
OF CHARLES COUNTY SHALL, PURSUANT TO THE AUTHOR-
ITY GIVEN THEM, APPOINT SUCH DEPUTY SHERIFFS AS
THEY MAY DEEM NECESSARY. [Not more than twelve full-time
deputies may be appointed in the county in the manner provided by
the local laws of the county at salaries of not less than five thousand
dollars ($5,000) each annually; any increase therein shall be based
