to this urban renewal program must be approved by the District
Council.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
on July 1, 1968.

CHAPTER 337
(House Bill 947)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (p) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replace-
ment Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle
"Compensation and Duties," to remove the monetary limit of
$37,500 on the compensation paid the deputies, assistants and
administrative staff of the Sheriff's Department in Prince
George's County; to provide, the County will supply the Sheriff
with an automobile for his use in his official duties
TO PROVIDE
THE SHERIFF WITH AN EXPENSE ALLOWANCE; and to
provide that all employees of the county sheriff's department except
for one administrative aide shall be employed, qualified and com-
pensated in accordance with the merit system regulations of the
County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(p) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "Sheriffs,"
subtitle "Compensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(p) Prince George's County.—The Sheriff of Prince George's
County shall receive an annual salary of $6,000 and $3,000 per year
[for operation and maintenance of his automobile during his term
as Sheriff, AND UP TO $1,500 PER YEAR FOR EXPENSES
WHICH MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS FOR APPROVAL AND WHICH ARE INCURRED FOR
THE USE AND WORK OF HIS OFFICE, [for the use and work of
his office within said county, without any additional cost to the county.
He may appoint such deputies and assistants as he may deem neces-
sary and a stenographer and at such compensation as he shall fix but
the compensation of all such deputies and assistants and a stenog-
rapher shall not exceed $37,500.] to cover any and all expenses
except those incidental to transportation which shall be furnished by

the County Commissioners of Prince George's County. All full-time
employees, including Deputy Sheriffs, jail guards, and jail matrons,
appointed by the Sheriff or assigned to him by the County Commis-
sioners for Prince George's County, shall be subject to said County's
Merit System as to qualifications, compensation and other regulations,
with the exception of one administrative aide, who may be appointed
by the Sheriff. Deputy Sheriffs employed prior to, and still on duty as
