451 and 849 of 1963, Chapter 807 of 1965, Chapters 522 and
610 of 1966 and Chapter 467 of 1967; and to enact new Sections
293 to 300, inclusive, in lieu thereof to stand in the place of the
sections so repealed and to be under the new subtitle "Bailiffs
and Court Reporters," generally revising the Local Laws of Balti-
more City concerning criers, bailiffs, watchmen, stenographers
and court reporters in the several counties and Baltimore City.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 293 to 303, inclusive, of the Charter and Code of
Public Local Laws of Baltimore City (1949 Edition, being Article 4
of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title "Baltimore
City," subtitle "Criers, Bailiffs, Watchmen and Stenographers," as
said Sections were variously amended by Chapters 270 and 378 of
the Acts of 1951, Chapter 725 of 1953, Chapters 85 and 270 of 1955,
Chapter 482 of 1957, Chapters 252, 451 and 849 of 1963, Chapter
807 of 1965, Chapters 522 and 610 of 1966 and Chapter 467 of 1967,
be and they are hereby repealed and that new Sections 293 to 300,
inclusive, be and they are hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand
in the place of the sections so repealed and to be under the new
subtitle "Bailiffs and Court Reporters," and to read as follows:

Bailiffs and Court Reporters

293.    Watchmen

The Clerks of any of the courts of the Supreme Bench of Balti-
more City may employ such watchmen as may be authorized by
the Comptroller of the State of Maryland.

294.    Bailiffs: Appointment, Salaries

The Supreme Bench of Baltimore City is authorized to appoint
such number of bailiffs, including Law Clerk-Bailiffs and Secretary
Bailiffs, as may be needed to assist the Judges thereof in the per-
formance of their duties. All persons appointed as bailiffs prior to
the effective date of this Act, including the bailiffs who on that date
are designated as Jury Commissioner and Assistant Jury Commis-
sioner, and all bailiffs who may thereafter be appointed, shall hold
office at the pleasure of the Supreme Bench and be paid such salaries
as shall be provided in the annual Ordinance of Estimates of Balti-
more City and approved by the Supreme Bench under the provisions
of Section 303D of Article IV of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland as it may be amended from time to time.

295.    Bailiffs: Longevity Retirement

(a)    Any bailiffs who, on the effective date of this Act, are des-
ignated as Jury Commissioner and as Assistant Jury Commissioner,
shall, after having served twenty preceding consecutive years as
a bailiff and/or Jury Commissioner or Assistant Jury Commissioner,
be entitled to retirement salaries in the amount of $5,000 per annum
for the Jury Commissioner and $4,000 per annum for the As-
sistant Jury Commissioner; provided, however, such retirement shall
be mandatory upon attainment of age seventy years.

(b)    All bailiffs who, on the effective date of this Act, are re-
ceiving retirement pay by reason of having served twenty consecu-
